A lead counsel for the embattled MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyepong is challenging the charge of treason preferred by the Police against his client.
Lawyer Atta Akyea who was contributing to the subject on Joy News Television’s current affairs programme, pm: EXPRESS said his client’s comments were misunderstood.
“All that Kennedy said was that we should ‘Rise up to the occasion and stop this mayhem but if the Police won’t stop, then I declare war on such lawlessness. The Police then called the radio station and got the tape as evidence to say that he was inciting violence which is not true”.
Mr. Agyapong has been charged with treason and is standing trial at an Accra court.
Mr. Atta Akyea argued that by the 1992 constitution, the Kencity Media Limited owner committed no offence, describing it as unfair attempts to take his comments out of context.
A Lecturer at the University of Ghana Law Faculty, Kissi Agyebeng who was a co-panelist on the show however disagreed with the Abuakwa North MP, insisting the action by the Police is deeply grounded in law.
He was however worried the offenders of the law cannot be bailed as per the 1992 constitution.
A Research Fellow at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kojo Opoku Aidoo played down the intention of the NPP firebrand.
“In this period, political parties will exaggerate in order to win public support and that is what Kennedy Agyapong did but in his case, I don’t think he has the capacity to carry out his threat and I do not think the Police CID and the BNI have any evidence to show that he was planning anything of that sort”.
