The Tamale High Court has acquitted the Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Alhaji Jacob Iddrisu Wunbenkpang, who had been charged with unlawful possession of firearms.

The allegations stemmed from an incident that occurred a day after the 2020 presidential elections, during which the MP was accused of being in possession of firearms.

The matter came to light after a tragic shooting incident on December 9, 2020, at the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) office in Savelugu, resulting in the unfortunate death of a young girl.

Following the incident, the police conducted a raid at the party office and found an AK-47 rifle and 60 rounds of ammunition, leading to suspicions that these firearms might have been used in the crime. Subsequently, the Savelugu MP was arrested and put on trial.

In March 2023, the Court issued a bench warrant for the MP's arrest as he had failed to appear before the court since 2020.

However, on Monday, July 31, 2023, the same Court acquitted the MP of all charges brought against him.

The Court's decision signifies that Alhaji Jacob Iddrisu Wunbenkpang has been cleared of the allegations and is no longer facing any legal repercussions in relation to the charges of unlawful possession of firearms.
