Western Publications Limited, publishers of the Daily Guide have stated that they feel maligned and insulted by the publication of untrue stories in some newspapers about an alleged sodomy act that occurred at the newspaper’s premises. According to a release signed by investigative journalist, Halifax Ansah- Addo on behalf of the management of Western Publications, reports about the act in newspapers such as the Ghanaian Lens, The Informer and The Herald (which they claim are aligned to government), have been malicious and slanderous. The release condemns the stories and accuse the newspapers of doing lazy journalism because they did not do due diligence before publishing. The Ghanaian Lens and the other newspapers had earlier reported that a man by name Ohene, purported to be the nephew of Freddie Blay who is the Chairman of Western Publications, had sodomised a 12-year-old boy at the premises of the Daily Guide with the promise of giving him a bicycle. The newspapers also alleged that Freddie Blay is the leader of a supposed sodomy academy. However speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Monday, Halifax Ansah-Addo denied the story saying the suspect is not the nephew of Freddie Blay and does not work at the Daily Guide as is being reported. He said even though the police are investigating a case of a minor who has been sodomised by one Ohene, that story has nothing to do with the Daily Guide as the man does not work there. Halifax disclosed that the police have not been able to establish that the said incident occurred at the premises of the Daily Guide as the victim has mentioned about three places as where he was sodomised. According to him, the suspect came to visit one of the staff at their printing department which is a residential facility and is far from the main office. In a quick rebuttal, Editor of the Ghanaian Lens, Kobby Fiagbe asked how the suspect got to know that the Daily Guide had bicycles in its office one of which he offered the victim if indeed he was a visitor as Halifax was claiming. Kobby Fiagbe who stuck to his story also hit back at the paper for saying his outfit was engaging in lazy journalism saying the Daily Guide was the first culprit when it came to ‘arm chair’ journalism. He gave examples of Daily Guide reports such as ‘Mills Boy in rape case’, Mills Boy arrested’ as stories which did not have any direct link with President Mills but were headlined like that to buttress his point.
