The Data Protection Commission says it will begin prosecuting executives of several organisations classified as data controllers.
Under the Data Protection law, entities acting as data controllers must officially register with the commission and sign on to a code that will guide the management to know the data they collect from the public.
But many have failed to do so, per the commission's assessment.
Affected institutions include airlines, churches, hotels, the media, banks and others collecting people’s personal data as part of their work.
A six-month amnesty granted by the Data Protection Commission due to the Covid-19 impact expires at the end of this month, and the commission says it will simply punish heads of organisations that fail to comply.
Director of Regulatory and Compliance at the Commission, Dr. Patrick Adonoo told JoyNews "We must santise our data ecosystem."
"In eight days if you have not registered as a data controller, the law will come after you," he said.
Dr Adonoo further advised the public against engaging in business activities with persons or organisation not under listed to be registered with the Commission.
