Democracy Hub, organisers of the three-day #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamseyNow demonstrations, has strongly condemned the unlawful detention of protesters by the Ghana Police Service.
According to the group, several protesters were unlawfully detained and unjustly arraigned without due process.
In a statement on Tuesday, September 24, the group said that, based on credible intelligence, protesters arrested late Sunday afternoon and the day before are being deliberately transferred to different police stations across the region.
“This is a ploy to ensure they spend the maximum 48-hour detention period without access to legal representation," part of the statement said.
It further accused the police of intentionally denying the detained protesters their right to legal counsel, violating their constitutional rights.
The group added that these actions are an attempt to suppress the voices of citizens exercising their legitimate right to protest, thereby undermining the democratic principles of freedom of assembly and expression.
Meanwhile, 10 out of the protesters arrested during the demonstration were the first to be remanded after appearing in court today.
The entire group, numbering about 39, was transported in different buses under heavy security presence.
In court, the demonstrators were charged with conspiracy to commit crime, namely; unlawful assembly.
At the end of the day, a total of 39 protestors have been remanded into custody.
Meanwhile, a bench warrant has been issued for one person who failed to show up in court.
Convenor for the #FixTheCountry group, Oliver Baker-Vormawor is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
