Ghana’s fastest rapper, Sarkodie is undoubtedly one of the country’s best music acts who is currently enjoying huge popularity due to his rap prowess.
That skill is what prompted Senegalese born American music star and owner of Konvict Music, Akon, to sign and announce a record deal with Sarkodie in 2009.
The deal was made public on Saturday, January 6, 2010. Korsah, a source close to Sarkodie had told the media that “The full details of the deal will be revealed in a week’s time because we are still doing the paper works but what we can say is that Sarkodie is on Konvict Music record label now,” affirming the fact that there was a deal between the artiste and Konvict Music.
Two years down the line nothing major has come out of that deal. Sarkodie disclosed in an interview with Tim Westwood of BBC 1Xtra in December 2011 during his UK tour that, “I am not signed, Akon endorsed Sarkodie. ‘You need to watch out for Sarkodie from Ghana’ that is what Akon is saying … up to now Sarkodie has been independent.”
Akon in December 2011 signed Nigerian artistes, P-SQuare, 2Face Idibia and Wizkid to his Konvict Music label as part of its campaign to promote African artistes.
Within a month of that signing there has been major international collaborations between some of those acts notable amongst them is P-Square’s collaboration with Akon, Rick Ross and Usher Raymond.
The President of Konvict Music International, Babs, in an interview with Joy News, has however stressed that contrary to perceptions, the marriage between Sarkodie and Konvict Music is still very fertile.
According Babs, “We are still doing business; there is nothing [that has] changed. You can see the success even people who were complaining and talking crazy and after we endorsed Sarkodie you see where Sarkodie is and is going to be even be bigger than that … Sarkodie is officially with us [Konvict Music].”
With all said and done, was there really a deal between Sarkodie and Konvict Music and if there was a deal at all, what has become of it?
