The Communications Manager for Ghana Urban Water Project, Stanley Martey has dismissed claims by Water Tanker Drivers Association that water distribution has been politicized by the Ghana Water Company Limited.
The Tanker Drivers Association had accused the Ghana Water Company for politicizing distribution of water by allocating water hydrants operations to some politicians.
Reacting to this on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, the Communications Manager for Ghana Urban Water Project, Stanley Martey denied the allegation and explained that water hydrants have been handed over to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to manage in order to boost revenue collection.
He added that the issue of unaccounted revenue is a major problem for the company, compelling it to hand over water hydrants operations to Assemblies to run, while the revenue accrued is given back to the Ghana Water Company Limited.
Stanley Martey said Tanker Drivers were stopped by National Security from operating because their operations were affecting pressure of the flow of water to people’s homes.
But he was quick to say their operations were stopped not because of any political reason.
He noted that water hydrants do not belong to the Tanker Drivers Association as they had claimed.
Earlier, President for Water Tanker Drivers Association, Sampson Gyedu Broni accused the National Security for shutting down water hydrants and allocating them to few politicians to operate.
He noted that for the past two years, activities of Water Tanker Drivers Association have been dormant putting some of their members out of business.
Sampson Gyedu Broni defended the high pricing of water tank, which he said was due to long distance they cover to access the water.
He also claimed the Association funded the construction of water hydrants but Ghana Water Company has taken it from them.
