A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP's Communications team, Kwabena Sarpong is advocating no salary for striking doctors and any other group that will go on strike.
Though he supports the ongoing strike action by doctors, because the 1992 constitution guarantees their rights to do so, he said the “employer which is the government should not give them a pesewa for withdrawing their services”.
"Those doctors who are going on strike should be bold enough and tell the whole nation that they will not take their salaries… the government must not pay them because they have withdrawn their services," Kwabena Sarpong stressed.
Kwabena Sarpong cited several instances where public servants have embarked on strikes but at the end of the day go home with fat salaries, adding that even members of parliament who boycott parliamentary proceedings deserve no pay.
He recalled that when teachers went on a nine-month strike during the Kufuor-led NPP administration, the teachers still received salaries after concluding negotiations with government.
Kwabena Sarpong made the submission while contributing to a panel discussion on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday on the issue of whether Ghanaian doctors are being pampered or deserve what they are demanding.
Kwabena Sarpong however dismissed the assertion that the strike by the doctors is politically motivated.
Doctors have been on strike for over a week with pockets of hospitals recording deaths blamed on the ongoing strike.
There have been a public outcry for doctors to return to the wards, but the doctors say that until their demands are met, they will not return.
