The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners (SPMDP) Ghana, has elected Dr. Andre Kwasi-Kumah as its national president.
He is the CEO of Eden Family Hospital and Chorkor Community Hospital, and former Assistant National Secretary of the Society.
Dr. Andre Kwasi-Kumah’s election, along with other executives who will all hold office for two years (2023 – 2025), was held at the SPMDP’s 42nd Annual General Meeting on the theme: “Training of Healthcare Professionals in Ghana: The Role of Private Health Facilities”.
A communique issued on Sunday, August 6, 2023 following the AGM, listed the new executives as;
- Dr. Andre Kwasi-Kumah, National President.
- Dr. Matthew Edusei, National Secretary.
- Dr. Chris Adomako, National Vice President
- Dr. Harry Tawiah, Immediate past National President.
Members of SPMDP called on the government to institute; among others, measures to reduce the burden private health facilities go through in procuring both conventional and state of the art equipment to enhance healthcare delivery in the country.
They also asked the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance to negotiate with the private health facilities to post nurses and doctors to these private facilities every year to alleviate the hardships these qualified personnel go through, sitting at home after qualifications.
Other resolutions were;
- That the whole policy of healthcare professionals postings in general must be given a critical look and be made more equitable such that in the end the client shall benefit from quality of care from both public and private facilities.
- That our compatriots who venture into providing professional training to our Kinsmen and Women, must not sacrifice quality for quantity and must do a careful balancing act between provision of service and profitability.
- That all our members who are qualified and given the nod to train these professionals such as is done at Bemuah Hospital and elsewhere are given the necessary academic recognition.
“Finally, while we salute our pioneer Family Health Hospital and Medical College and all the others that followed in their steps i.e Accra Medical College etc and the pioneers in Nursing and allied Health education such as Narh-Bita College and all others, we call on government to recognize these pioneering efforts.”
