Ghanaian media personality and lecturer Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe Akenten has shared her thoughts on traditional values and social norms in Ghana.
Dr. Anima spoke with Hitz FM in an interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, emphasising the importance of reviving traditional values in Ghanaian society.
"Yes, so far I would say when we talk about the traditional values, our norms, so far I will say that before then we used to look down upon those things. We're not practicing them, we're not valuing them," she stated.
However, she noted that there has been a positive shift in recent times.
"But now it is even better than before. Yes, I have always advocated for the need for parents to inculcate our traditional knowledge, our values, our teachings," she added.
Dr. Akenten also highlighted the importance of respectful communication, particularly among the younger generation.
"You are supposed to show respect. I would say not only showing respect, but at least you, you should have some sensitivity as to whatever you are saying to other people," she emphasised.
Unfortunately, Dr. Anima observed that the proliferation of social media has contributed to the erosion of these values.
"But now what do we hear? Because, you know, all those values were looked down upon in our upbringing. And parents, we sort of have been busy. When you go on social media now, in the media you hear young people talking about adults and it's mostly about insulting, you know, so those values, I think it's about time and even, especially in times like this that we have to promote and I'm glad we are talking about it," she lamented.
Dr. Anima's comments underscore the need for Ghanaians to reflect on their traditional values and social norms, and to make a conscious effort to promote and preserve them for future generations.
