Eastern Regional Minister Helen Ntoso has warned she will deal ruthlessly with young persons who opt for galamsey business despite decent job opportunities being offered them.
Her warning follows a report that over a hundred youths in the Kwaebibirem and Denkyembuor districts in the region have rejected the opportunity offered them to be revenue collectors.
The youths have also complained that the remunerations for those jobs are not enough.
But Helen Ntoso told Joy News this should not be an excuse to indulge in an activity government considers illegal.
She said the choice of a “bad business” such as illegal mining over legitimate work showed they were simply interested in “quick money”.
Claims of insufficient remuneration was untenable, she said and added commission-based remuneration, allowed the youths to work hard to earn as much as they want.
“If they are not interested, my message to them is that we are wiping out galamsey business,” she warned.
She said youths caught in galamsey will be dealt with "ruthlessly".
The Minister advised the youths to register with the Assembly to be considered for these employment opportunities.
