The police guard who was shot during a robbery at the Western Union outlet of the Ecobank at Madina this morning June 23, 2008 has died. The robbers took away cash to the tune of GH¢60,000. They also made away with two AK47 riffles belonging to the policemen.
According to Joy News’ Kwame Seth Boateng, the four heavily armed robbers, who are reported to have trailed the bullion van when it arrived at the bank, were said to have followed the bank officials carrying the trunk containing the money to the counter upstairs. They reportedly instructed the police man escorting the money to surrender his AK47 riffle and he complied, but another officer on duty at the bank refused and they shot him, but he died on arrival at the Legon hospital.
Earlier reports available to myjoyonline indicated that some of the robbers have been arrested, but police sources say no one has been arrested yet.
The outlet has subsequently been closed down and all other shops in the vicinity have also been shut.
