President-elect of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on both sides of the political divide to work together for the prosperity of the country.
He said this while delivering his victory speech at his Nima residence, Accra after winning the presidential election with 51.17% of valid votes cast.
He said that the outcome of the elections, particularly the parliamentary elections is an indication of the fact that Ghanaians wanted both sides of the political divide to work hand-in-hand to ensure that the country retained its enviable international standing.
“The period for campaigning is over and the outcome of the election has been decided. The Ghanaian people through the results have made it loud and clear that the two parties - the NPP and the NDC must work together especially in parliament for the good of the country.
“Now is the time for each and every one of us irrespective of our political affiliation to unite, join hands, stand shoulder to shoulder and work hard to place Ghana where she deserves to be – a prosperous and dynamic member of the global community making her own unique contribution to the growth of world civilization,” Akufo-Addo stated.
The President-elect’s speech comes after at least 33 incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs lost their seats in the December 7 elections.
The list also includes an additional 4 NPP MPs who are retiring.
In the keenly contested December 7 elections, the NPP was able to win 137 parliamentary seats while the National Democratic Congress, won 134 seats.
This is against the 2016 parliamentary makeup of 169 NPP MPs and 106 NDC MPs.
