School enrolment at Asikasu Methodist Basic School near Adeiso in the Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region, has been reducing steadily for some time now as a result of lack of class rooms and the discouraging atmosphere for teaching and learning.
The school which is over 75 years old is said to have churned out very important personalities scattered across the country but still remains one of the most vulnerable and deprived basic schools in the Eastern Region.
The Current population of the school has dwindled to about 40% as parents continue to withdraw their wards due to its poor infrastructure.
A section of the pupils still use the dilapidated structure as kindergarten block, which has been described as death trap. Others also study under trees and shades nearby.
As a result, the MTN Ghana Foundation has cut sod for the construction of a six unit classroom block at an estimated cost of GH¢ 270,000 to be completed within six months.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, the Executive Secretary of MTN Ghana Foundation Mr. Robert Kuzoe their desire is to create a pleasing environment for teaching and learning and also support increased enrolment in Asikadu Methodist Basic School with large comfortable classrooms.
He called for support from stakeholders to promote basic education, an essential tool for the development of a bright future for every child.
He indicated that MTN Ghana Foundation has invested about GH¢12 million in areas of health and education as part of their corporate social responsibility.
