United are ready to offer £60m in an attempt to take him to Old Trafford, and Tottenham last night refused to comment on whether an official bid had been made.
Spurs are desperate to keep hold of their star player, and chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear he would reject all advances for the player.
But Starsport understands the brilliant winger is interested in a move to the Premier League champions.
And that could put him at odds with his club if United step up their bid to land their man.
Levy is insistent he does not want to sell a top star again to a Premier League rival, and the Old Trafford giants in particular.
He is still smarting over the reaction from fans to the transfer of striker Dimitar Berbatov to United for £30m in 2008.
Although it netted the London club a £19m profit, supporters were seething over what they saw as a lack of ambition from Levy.
Real Madrid have been longtime admirers of Bale and it had been thought the Welshman would give Spurs another season, then look at going to the Bernabeu.
But the 23-year-old, who scored 26 goals for his club last season, is attracted by the prospect of joining United now, giving him Champions League football, which he won’t have for a second season in a row with Spurs.
Levy is reported ready to double Bale’s wages to £150,000-a-week in a bid to keep him happy at White Hart Lane.
It remains to be seen whether the unassuming Bale will be prepared to mount a campaign to get away from the club.
But if United keep increasing their offer, it could be Levy will be forced to let Bale go.
