A feed mill meant for use by the National Youth Leadership Training Institute at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region, has been left to rot for over 40 years. The mill which used to produce several tonnes of feed for supply to the animal husbandry project of the school, has now been left at the mercy of the weather.Parts of the mill have been removed and cannot be traced while the skeleton plant is now in a deplorable state. Its supporting generator plant has also been left to the same fate. This situation is taking a heavy toll on the operational cost of TYCRISS LIVESTOCK FARMS, a local poultry player partnering the National Youth Authority to train about one million youth and pensioners in free range poultry rearing. One hundred and fifty (150) of such beneficiaries who went through the one week intensive training programme, have graduated and have been supplied with birds and coops to begin their own poultry business at a subsidized fee.Director of Agric at the National Youth Authority, which oversees the operations of the Institute, Mr. Dzorpklenu Ede Ziko disclosed to Adom News that his outfit will require about GHS30,000 to rebuild the mill, while that of fixing the generating plant was yet to be assessed.Currently over 10,000 birds are being raised on the farm but feed has to be purchased from the Ashaiman market at a fee of GHS53, while Mr. Ziko said this cost could be reduced to GHS45 or less if they were preparing the feed themselves.Chief Executive of TYCRISS LIVESTOCK FARMS, Nicholas Atiogbe, is appealing to philanthropists and other non-governmental organizations willing to partner them to come to their aid and help in repairing the feed mill, in order to provide quality training to the youth. It costs each beneficiary GHS82 including accommodation, to successfully go through the five days training programme.
