The final funeral rites of the late poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor has been held at his hometown, Wheta in the Ketu North district of the Volta Region.
Professor Awoonor was shot and killed in a terrorist attack at the Westgate Mall in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi last September.
His mortal remains was cremated at the Lashibi funeral home in Accra on the wishes of the late former Chairman of the Council of State, but the funeral ceremony is being held by the family to bid their final farewell.
President John Mahama and some government officials joined the chiefs and people of Wheta to pay their last respect to the late poet.
Joy News’ Ivy Setordzi who was at the funeral said the atmosphere was characterised by a misture of cerebration and morning.
According to her, the ceremony was interspersed with singing of traditional dirges, drumming and dancing.
