A group of fishermen in the Central Region have issued a stern warning to NPP flag-bearer aspirant, Nana Akufo-Addo, to stop tarnishing the image of President Mills.
The fishermen have accused Nana Addo of funding some NPP activists in the region to tarnish the image of the Mills administration, and have therefore asked him to withdraw his sponsorship to the group.
A group of fishermen in the region accused the president of breaking his electoral promise of ensuring stable prices for their fishing inputs.
They claimed the prices of their equipment had increased astronomically contrary to the president's promise. They subsequently declared their support for Nana Addo.
But another group claims the first group of fishermen were sponsored by the NPP flag-bearer aspirant to undermine the president and his administration.
At a meeting organized by fishermen, canoe owners and elders of most of the fishing communities at Moore, the people expressed their indignation against what they called attempts by some politicians to cause confusion among them.
“From their name you can tell where they come from. Their name is Central Region Fishermen: Friends of Nana Akufo-Addo…if Nana Addo has organized people to do these things, I bet you, master, it is very risky,” Kweku Sam spokesperson for the angry group said.
But in response, Mustapha Hamid, who speaks for Nana Addo, said Nana Addo is only minding his campaign business, describding the funding allegation as “a laughable one”. He urged the fishermen to rather concentrate on difficulties they are facing under the Mills administration.
He noted that people in the region have cause to complain if they think their lot have not been bettered under the present government.
“For example when the NPP was in power premix was sold for Gh¢1.8 per gallon, now it is GH¢2.5, outboard motor was GH¢2,800, now it is GH¢5,000. I think the fisher people should address these matters…whether or not Nana Addo sponsored anybody to say anything is an insult to the intellect of the fisher people. It is like saying that 'I am hungry and I don’t know that I am hungry until somebody comes to prompt me that I am hungry'".
Meanwhile a government delegation is meeting the fishermen in the Central Region to discuss their operational challenges. Deputy Agric Minister, Nii Amasah Namoale is leading the delegation.
