Five professional bodies in Ghana's built environment sector demand accountability for galamsey, calling for chiefs, community leaders, government officials, and politicians who enable illegal mining in their areas to face prosecution and removal from office.
The professional bodies including the Ghana Institute of Architects, Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Ghana Institute of Planning and Institute of Engineering Technology -Ghana urged chiefs to emulate Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's strong stance against galamsey, taking action against sub-chiefs involved in illegal mining.
"We call on all Chiefs to follow the good example set by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, who has taken a strong stance against illegal mining by some of his sub-chiefs," a statement from the bodies pointed out.
The environmental professional bodies also pledged to collaborate with government and stakeholders to develop sustainable mining solutions, and call on political parties to present their anti-galamsey policy proposals and commit to implementing effective measures to address the root causes of the issue.
"It is crucial for all stakeholders—government, civil society, traditional authorities, and private sector entities—to collaborate in combating the galamsey crisis. Success will require a unified approach, free from discrimination, ensuring that all perpetrators, regardless of their status or affiliation, are held accountable," the statement added.
The professional bodies emphasized their dedication to collaborating with Ghanaians, fellow professionals, and stakeholders to take decisive legal action against illegal mining, ensuring the government and all parties are held accountable to protect Ghana's future.
"Together, we can safeguard Ghana’s natural resources, protect our environment, and secure a sustainable future for all."
