In Ghana, football is considered the greatest sport on earth - it is football season all year, every year. So it is no surprise that football is a popular search query on Google Search.
On Thursday, Google announced the top ten most searched football teams in Ghana and it revealed that the Chelsea Football club reigns supreme as the most searched FC on Google in August.
In 2005, Chelsea bought Ghanaian football star Michael Essien for $24.4 million dollars, one of the most expensive transactions involving a Ghanaian player. This transaction made Chelsea FC a household name in Ghana and expanded the club’s Ghanaian fanbase considerably.
Eight years on, Chelsea is still Ghana’s football club.
Also on the list on the top ten most searched Football Clubs in Ghana are Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Interestingly the Accra Hearts of Oak FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC did not make the top ten most searched football club list.
They placed at the eleventh and thirteenth most searched football clubs respectively.
For those not Googling their favourite football teams, celebrities, technology and general search queries on “how to” were also prominent themes in August.
The top seven trending search terms in Ghana across all themes for the month of August were Facebook, Ghanaweb.com, Goal.com, YouTube,Google, Yahoo Mail and Myjoyonline.com.
