Four children were burnt to death on Monday night when fire gutted a room in which they were sleeping at Nsumfa, near Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra.
The Police named them as Lynette Brenya,9; Freda Brenya, 7; Terry Amprofi-Halm, 5; and Eugine Osei Adu, 5; all pupils of Party Complex School at Santa Maria.
A neighbour’s son who tried to rescue them suffered serious bums and is on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Briefing journalists, the Commander of Odorkor District Police, Superintendent Ebenezer Kweku Asare, said the incident occurred at about 8:00p.m. when the children were asleep alone.
He said Mrs. Freda Brenya, mother of Lynnet and Freda, was reported to have left the children in the room during a power outage to see her landlord who lives a distance away from the house. Their father lives in the United States of America.
She saw the house on fire on her return at about 9:00p.m, with some residents trying to bring it under control before the arrival of the Fire Service.
The charred bodies of the children were retrieved from the room and conveyed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital morgue by the Police.
An eye-witness who assisted in bringing the fire under control, said the children were locked up in one of the bedrooms which had to be forced open to reach them.
The sitting and the bedroom of Mrs. Brenya’s apartment were totally destroyed.
