Allow me now give my subjective definition of politics?
Politics (in Ghana) is NPP or NDC. Bam! Simply put.
And it is not because this definition is right but because by our actions, this view is justified. We just don’t have the courage to see beyond the two.
We display a certain consciousness and zeal in the selection of political managers of the country. Politics in Ghana seems to consume the souls of the citizenry, even more than football which little must be said about in Ghana regarding the passion and even sometimes foolishness (lol).
And that is exactly the fanatical energy that a politician will feed on.
The Ghanaian politician will continue to be successful as long the ordinary people (taxpayers) buy into the divisive political tension fused deliberately with tribalism. This pitch black spectacle has brought us where we are as a country.
I don’t like the definition myself, and it doesn’t mean we are ignorant of all the very academic meanings and what have you. 1995 romantic comedy The American President which starred Michael Douglas has a fantastic quote about politics. “Politics is about perception”. This is couldn’t be any more realistic.
And not just in Ghana but in Africa we have believed for so long and continue to believe a façade which is carefully crafted to keep the African and the Ghanaian small ignorant, illiterate, small minded, incapable of questioning the status quo or permanently putting on his/her thinking cap.
The partisanship of politics is so skin deep even the occurrence of an eclipse or the discovery of oil is frivolously credited to one political regime or the other. Even the number of years senior high school students spend in school was served with political spicing.
