The fourth wave of Covid-19 infections in Ghana may be over.
Data published by the Ghana Health Service show a steady decline in daily infections despite low observance of the protocols.
From a high of 1,324 new cases recorded on December 22, 2021, new infections have gradually declined.
The latest data, which captures events on December 27, put the number of new infections at 790 new cases.
Events on Christmas Eve, Christmas and Boxing Day showed significant improvement.
There were parties, picnics, masquerades, family visits, and other super spreader events these days, but they still managed to keep infections low.
Active cases remain high (10,218), but recoveries should set in within a week or so, considering the Ghana Health Service reviewed the policy on discharge or de-isolation.
The discharge policy is as follows;
- Asymptomatic
De-isolate - 14 days after initial positive test. (Date sample was taken). - Symptomatic
De-isolate - 14 days after symptom onset, plus at least three days without symptoms.
Severe and critical cases have also remained low, taking the burden off our health facilities.

Deaths
Deaths in December remain a challenge. There were five deaths on December 27.
There have been 67 deaths in December, bringing total deaths since the pandemic started to 1,295 in Ghana.

If the cases remain low and the report for the New Year activities stay low for new infections, the country could be on its way out of the fourth wave as early as the end of January.
