Media practitioner with Accra-based Onua TV, Captain Smart, has expressed strong views that the country’s older leaders have little to offer the youth.
According to him, many Ghanaians, particularly the youth, have been vocal in their criticism, accusing the country's leaders of mismanaging the economy and plunging it into crisis, and thus the leaders have also destroyed the nation's water bodies, which are among the few remaining resources available to the citizens.
Speaking at the three-day #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstrations on Thursday, October 3, Captain Smart emphasised the dire situation of Ghana’s water resources, stating, “We do not have the money to import water.
"Even the police gathered here do not have the money to import water. Where we have reached, we are saying that we will not allow anybody to destroy our water bodies.
"The rivers are being polluted, and when you talk about it, they don’t want to understand. But I thank God that there are people among us who will rise and demonstrate,” he said.
Captain Smart also expressed concern about the future of the country’s water supply, particularly for the youth, saying "The youth cannot wait and think about the kind of water they will drink in the next five years."
He further questioned how the police, who use water cannons to disperse protesters, would find clean water for those cannons if the country’s water sources continue to be polluted.
He also raised concerns about the growing number of youth suffering from kidney problems, linking it to the consumption of polluted water.
“When you go to health facilities where they perform dialysis, you’ll find that the majority of those affected with kidney problems are young people. We can’t import water, so when we drink this polluted water, our kidneys start to fail,” he lamented.
In light of this, he claimed that the older leaders in the country have enough money to buy clean water for themselves.
Captain Smart questioned the rationale behind the recent arrests of protesters involved in the anti-galamsey demonstration and criticised the authorities for their actions.
