Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammy Awuku, has countered criticism of his tenure by publishing a comprehensive list of projects undertaken by the NLA Good Causes Foundation, highlighting achievements in health, education, youth development, and culture.
Under the “Health” pillar, Mr Awuku cited the construction of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the University of Ghana Hospital, the settlement of surgery bills for a seven-week-old baby with spina bifida at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, as well as donations to psychiatric hospitals and nationwide medical outreach programmes.
In education, he pointed to the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Akyem Dwenase, the establishment of a smart laboratory for the Borstal Correctional Institute, and the provision of scholarships for “brilliant but needy students.”
Support also extended to youth and sports development, with contributions to clubs such as Real Tamale United and Hasaacas Ladies, while the arts and culture sector benefited through sponsorship of festivals including Hogbetsotso and Fetu Afahye.
Awuku framed the publication of the list as evidence that the Foundation’s work made a tangible impact across Ghana, benefiting groups as diverse as infants, students, sports teams and traditional leaders.
He argued that the record demonstrated the NLA’s commitment to transforming revenue into social good.
