The Ghana Golf Association will hold the maiden edition of the Golf awards come 22nd December, 2013 at the La Palm Hotel as it was lauched on November 18.
The launch was attended by known persons in the sport of golf in Ghana, including the country director for golf, Mr. Tom Kennedy, who is in his first year of his three-year tenure, Mr. Mike Aggrey, Dr. Frimpong, President of Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Gp Capt. F.A. Gyimah-Kwakye, Hon. Secretary of GGA and Madam Alice Attipoe. At the launch, Mad. Alice Attipoe, President of the National Sports Authority (NSA), in her address, encouraged patronage of golf by people at all levels and reiterated the NSA’s support for all sports disciplines.
In his presentation, the president of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) noted that, golf clubs are not surviving because they are not receiving sponsorship. He stated further that, mining firms are known for maintaining golf courses and as such, there are more golf courses in the Western region than any other part of the country.
He called on corporate institutions to support golf, since the sport cannot survive without sponsorship. He lauded the efforts committed by Tullow oil aimed at developing golf, particularly, their building of golf academies in Accra, Tema and Kumasi and their efforts at upgrading the Achimota golf course.
Further, he stated that, golf is not an elitist sport as publicly perceived and ended by wishing the Black Stars well in their game against the Pharaohs tomorrow.
In all, 22 categories were named, comprising Amateur Golfer Of The Year (Male And Female), Most Improved Golfer (Male And Female), Most Promising Golfer (Male And Female), Junior Golfer Of The Year (Male And Female), Senior Golfer Of The Year (Male And Female), Recognition Award (2 Slots), Golf Manager Of The Year, Pro Golfer Of The Year, Best Dressed Golfer (Male And Female), Golf Club Of The Year, Golf Personality Of The Year, Golfer Of The Year, Golf Spot, Golf Company(Ies) And Media Houses Which Have Supported Golf.
On his part, Capt. Butah (RTD), chairman for the launch, added that the awards night is not just to identify and reward golfers, to conclude the GGA’s calendar for the year, create platform for projection of golf, demystify the popular notion that golf is an elitist sport, but also, establish the fact that tourism can be encouraged through sports, golf inclusive.
Capt. Butah (RTD) also entreated the awards committee to be transparent in their selection and presentation of awards to deserving recipients.
The event was also attended by the country director for golf, Mr. Tomm Kennedy, who expressed his delight at the hosting of the maiden GGA Awards night during his tenure of office.
The event shall be hosted at the La Palm Hotel, on December 22, 2013 at 6pm and is being organized and managed by Primeval Media Ghana Limited. Readers will recall the $1.2m uniBank-Black stars deal which was also brokered by Primeval Media. Primeval Media is an event management company which also organizes a monthly workout session at the Accra Sports Stadium on the last Saturday of each month, dubbed ACCRA WORKS OUT, between 7am and 9am.
This month’s edition of the ACCRA WORKS OUT comes off on the 30th November, 2013.
