Private legal practitioner and journalist, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has raised concerns about the continuous loss of public funds through corruption and poor accountability.
Speaking at COMSSA FEST 2025 (Communication and Media Studies Students' Association Festival) at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), he cited the 2024 Auditor-General’s report, which revealed that Ghana lost GH¢18.41 billion to what was described as irregularities.
He quoted the report as saying “18.41 billion Ghana cedis has been misused or stolen”, explaining that the report uses “has been lost to irregularities,” which he described as ineffective communication.
According to him, such losses should not be downplayed as irregularities but be called by their true name — theft. “The monies have been lost to thievery, misuse- people have stolen them”, he added.
He explained that in the past five years alone, the country has lost nearly GH¢80 billion through mismanagement and corruption.
Mr Anyenini further criticised the removal from office of former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, arguing that he was forced out because he recovered millions of cedis in stolen funds.
“He was sacked because he was chasing the people who were stealing”, he said.
He urged Ghanaians to demand accountability, stressing that public resources must be used to provide education, healthcare, justice and opportunities for citizens.
“Citizens must use their voice to demand that leaders respect the constitution and deliver the dividends of democracy; education, healthcare, justice”, he added.
