The Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM) has donated items worth GHȼ1,000.00 to the Ghana Prisons Service as part of the celebration of the Eid-ul-Fitr.The items include bread, assorted drinks, bags of rice, biscuits, vegetable cooking oil, toiletries, drugs and Qurans.Sheikh Amin Bonsu, Acting National Chairman of the GMM, said the presentation was to share the special joy and blessing of the celebration with the inmates within the Greater Accra Region.He said it was for the inmates to feel part of the community and to remind them that being in prison was not a form of punishment but rather for transformation so that they would come out as better people and good citizens.Sheikh Bonsu appealed to the prisons to allow themselves go through the process of becoming better people and responsible citizens in the future, and also called on all stakeholders to help provide improved and better facilities to make life in the prisons much better for the prisoners.He also urged Ghanaians especially the youth to protect the peace currently enjoyed in the country no matter the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment.Mrs Matilda Baffour Awuah, Acting Director General, Ghana Prisons Service, expressed appreciation to the GMM for remembering the inmates in their celebration saying it would be a big relieve to them.She said the prisons have various needs with the most important one being able to cater for the needs of the prisoners, and so the presentation was a laudable effort.She said the prisoners are just victims of the problems and circumstances in the society and so it is important for members in the society to help rehabilitate them, to become better persons.“Rehabilitating prisoners is very important and it would be meaningless if members of the society do not complement the efforts of the prison authorities to help them”, she added.Mrs Baffour Awuah said the items would be used for its intended purpose and appealed to other organizations to help in this worthy cause.
