The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ademola Oluseyi Onafookan has advised Ghanaians to learn from the mistakes of Nigeria in order to ensure the maximum benefits of its oil find. He said oil is a blessing which can become a curse if not managed very well. Ambassador Onafookan said on ‘Inside Afrika’ on Radio Universe that, neighbouring countries like Nigeria had many lessons Ghana could learn without having to cross the ocean. He said oil is a blessing because it brings in more resources to the country which can be used to develop infrastructure and education; however, it can be dangerous for Ghana if the country relies on oil alone as was done with cocoa and gold. He also advised Ghana that, “when you get your oil money make sure you invest it in other areas to develop other sectors of your economy”. “You can learn a lot from Nigeria. We made our mistakes. Fortunately we have been able to hold ourselves together and I think now the oil has become more of a blessing than a curse” he stated. Meanwhile, the High Commissioner has expressed concerns that Nigerian nationals in Ghana were being made to pay an additional $120.00 after they had paid $50.00 for their residence permits. “The one that gives me concern I must sincerely say so, is the situation where people pay for their residence permit and then they are being charged another $120.00. We don’t charge that on Ghanaians in Nigeria. I think exceptions must be made because we treat Ghanaians like family and we would expect the same from here,” Ambassador Onafookan lamented.
