Fresh from winning two awards at the 2019 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), ‘The Burial of Kojo’ is being considered for two nominations at 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
The film is being considered for the ‘Best Motion Picture (Foreign Film)’ and ‘Best Director (Motion Picture)’ of the prestigious awards.
This is coming barely a month after Blitz Bazawule, who was well-known as rapper Bazaar, received an award for ‘Best Director-First Feature Film’ at the 15th edition of AMAA.
At the same awards, Cynthia Dankwa was adjudged ‘Best Young/Promising Actor’ for her role as Esi in ‘The Burial of Kojo’.

An elated Blitz Bazawule reacting to the Golden Globe announcement said in a tweet: “WHAAAAAAT!!!! @TheBurialOfKojo is up for a Golden Globe Nomination. First-ever for Ghana. Just Wow!!!”
Ama K. Abebrese, who starred in the film and also voiced the story of Cynthia Dankwa throughout the film, also reacting to the announcement said the film has made history.
“‘The Burial of Kojo’ has made HISTORY for Ghana. The first time a film from Ghana is eligible for a nomination for the Golden Globes ‘Best Foreign Language Film’!” she said.

‘The Burial of Kojo’ is a 2018 drama film set in Ghana, written and directed by Blitz Bazawule.
Filmed entirely in Ghana on a micro-budget, with local crew and several first-time actors, the film tells the story of Kojo (Joseph Otsiman), who is left to die in an abandoned gold mine, as his young daughter Esi (newcomer Cynthia Dankwa) travels through a spirit land to save him.
The film was produced by Blitz Bazawule, Ama Abebrese and Kwaku Obeng Boateng.
It had its world premiere in New York on September 21, 2018, at the Urban World Film Festival, where it was recognized as Best Narrative Feature (World Cinema). It is distributed by ARRAY and was released on the popular streaming service Netflix on March 21, 2019, making it the first Ghanaian film to premiere in selected countries worldwide, on Netflix.
