An association of Ghanaians living in Johannesburg, South Africa, is unhappy with the posture of the Ghana High Commission in complimenting their efforts to offer maximum support to the Black Stars’ winning campaign at the World Cup. According to the Ghanaian United Society, series of letters written to solicit support have not received any attention. The group wants to have access to information regarding the team’s camping as well as provision of national paraphernalia like flags and T-shirts to cheer the team. Chairman of the society, Kwabena Manu, says the Ghanaian nationals are defying challenges in accessing match tickets to turn out in their numbers to cheer on the team in the camps and stadium. They are looking forward to joining forces with other national supporters unions to offer maximum support for the Black Stars throughout the tournament. Mr. Manu however says they are handicapped in accessing essential resources to mobilize the Ghanaian fans in Joburg. “We wrote to the embassy for them to support us in terms of the players and supports so we can meet them and support them in anyway, but we did not get any reply”, he notes. This will however not stop the fans from trooping to the stadium. Already, the Black Stars support base in South Africa is taking shape as some Ghanaian Nationals living abroad are making way to the host country for the matches. They may not have the capacity to compete with South Africans in the antics of blowing the vuvuzela, but they are as determined as any other team to give maximum support for a Black Star victory. Ebenezer Nii Quartey for instance travelled from the United Kingdom with his wife to support the Black Stars and according to him more would be coming from the UK. He observed that “there is a group called Akwaaba UK who have rounded a whole bunch of people in the London areas and they’re coming in groups. We’ve also got groups from up north Manchester who are also coming. Our boys are going to do the country proud. We need to support our boys and they’ll do it for Ghana”.
