Counsellor Dominic Mbang, a Ghanaian, has been elected as the new Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich in Greater London for the period 2023-2024.

He and his wife (Mayoress) are the Borough's first Ghanaians and second African/Caribbean heritage mayors.

Cllr Mbang, a Woolwich Dockyard ward councillor, was first elected in May 2018 and has previously served on housing and anti-poverty committees.

He is a Specialist Renal Nurse and Specialist Discharge Nurse at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and he has also worked as a Ghanaian police officer.

Cllr Mbang is now the twelfth Mayor since since the elevation of the royal borough status.

Cllr Mbang succeeds outgoing mayor Cllr Leo Fletcher, who returns to the backbenches after raising over £50,000 for the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice and Lymphoma Action during his time.

The Deputy Mayor is now Cllr Jit Ranabhat, Ward Councillor for Plumstead and Glyndon.

Cllr Mbang was elected as a Deputy Mayor for the Royal Borough of Greenwich last year, assisting Mayor Leo Fletcher and participating in over 220 formal and unofficial engagements with organizations, schools, churches, businesses, communities, and charities.

He served as Labour Group Secretary and Treasurer, Disability Champion, and was interested in Health, Housing, Education, Community Safety, and the Environment as a councillor.

Cllr Mbang is also a Governor at King Parks and Newhaven Schools, as well as a regular participant at most faith groups and communities both within and outside of the borough.

Cllr Mbang has lived in the Royal Borough of Greenwich for the past 24 years and has completed additional training with the NHS as a Renal Nurse Specialist and Senior Discharge Nurse Specialist.

He has also served as a Steward and Learning Representative for the Royal College of Nursing for 17 years.

The Javan Coker Foundation, which empowers and supports children and young people with disabilities, including their families, carers, friends, and advocates, and promotes social inclusion, is Cllr Mbang's Mayoral charity for the coming year.

The Stroke Association is the second charity. This organization performs wonderful work in assisting those who have had the most terrifying experiences of their lives following a stroke.

They assist survivors in all aspects of their lives, including physical, emotional, and social. Their research team contributes to the advancement of therapies, care, and rehabilitation.

They give volunteer training and resources in Borough. On Thursday mornings, they have a Stroke Club at St Mary's Community Centre in Etham. This enables stroke survivors, their careers, family, and friends to share their experiences in a supportive and sociable setting.

Aside from the organizations mentioned above, Cllr Mbang will attend any other registered charity event in the Borough to support in any capacity.

Cllr Mbang received his schooling in Ghana and was trained as a State Registered Nurse before being recruited into the Ghana Police Service. He worked as a Teacher, State Registered Nurse, Police Officer, union representative, and political party activist.

He is the current chair of Ghana Greenwich, the chair of NDC South London, the vice chair of the Ghanaian Community in St Peters Church, and a member of other charities in the UK and Ghana.

Cllr Mbang and his wife Mary have excavated bore holes for needy communities, helped establish schools, churches, and community facilities, including a charity school in Ghana.

He recently organized an event to feed the elderly in over ten communities, as well as a homecoming conference for Kusaug Tertiary Institutions of Learning students in Ghana to equip them and speak about peace and development in the country.

He has received awards on his charity support, leadership, community champion and political activism for the vulnerable and disadvantaged.
