The NPP MP for Nkoranza North in the Brong Ahafo region, Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro has re-echoed the party’s stance that this December’s election will be observed with an eagle eye. According to Major Oduro, the NPP will leave no stone unturned to ensure fairness in the December polls, adding Ghanaians will not forgive the NPP if they fail to ensure that fairness is achieved in the elections. He has therefore urged loyal supporters of the party to play their part in ensuring that election malpractices like vote rigging are avoided in this year’s elections. Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM, Wednesday, Major Derek Oduro said President Mills’ statement that Ghana will hold peaceful elections is welcome, but said such statements should be backed by deeds. He said President Mills and his government should not pay lip service on holding peaceful elections, but should exhibit it to Ghanaians that government is committed to ensuring peace before, during and after the elections. Major Rtd Oduro said the NPP will not give room for election malpractices and will resist any attempt by the ruling government to rig and subsequently win the election. He cited some polling stations in the 2008 general elections where total votes cast were more than registered voters as some of the things that can lead to unrest in elections. Major Rtd Oduro therefore called on other opposition parties like the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) to be extra vigilant in the December polls to ensure that fairness is achieved at all cost. The MP touched on the unpopular ‘all die- be die’ by the NPP’s Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo explaining that the statement does not mean the party is at war with the government, but means they will resist all oppressors who attempt to undermine the sovereignty of the country. The MP alleged that the government has started rigging the elections by preventing NPP supporters from registering in the pilot biometric registration in the Brong Ahafo. He alleged that only 50 people out of over 700 in Busunya, and Asekye in his constituency, Nkoranza were allowed to register. He cited areas like Busunya, Fiema, and Dromankese all in his constituency as places where only a few people were allowed to register, adding all these can result in post election violence. He added that out of the 10 days that were earmarked for the registration, the registration officers were at post for few days, which deprived some people from registering. Still on the show, the Founder and Leader of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom said in order to avoid violence after elections, election laws in the country should be observed by all parties. He also asked the government not to use state funds for election campaigns, adding that is another recipe for war.
