Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, says that the West Africa Elders Forum is in Ghana to ensure that the country holds its elections without any crises.
The former president is part of a delegation from various West African countries, most of whom are former presidents and government officials, who are in the country to observe the elections.
According to the former president, the team will focus on the nation’s capital, Accra, with the primary mission of “ensuring there are no crises; that is the main thing the West Africa Elders Forum is doing,” he told the press at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
He explained that in the event of any disturbances, the delegation would “join (Ghana’s) stakeholders to deal with the issues.”
The Nigerian former president also revealed that, prior to today’s election, the delegation met with the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as well as the Electoral Commission (EC) and other stakeholders.
According to him, several issues were raised by these two political parties and the EC, and they have since been addressed with the Ghana Police Service.
He added, “We believe that those issues have been sorted out.”
Voting has begun at many polling stations across the 275 constituencies in the country. As of the time of this report, no disturbances have been recorded.
