Interior Minister Mark Woyongo says despite huge challenges facing the police administration in Ghana it remains the best in the West African coast.

He was speaking to Joy FM's Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson in the wake of the biggest police recruitment fraud that has hit the country.

There is a 'mensah' [bad nut] in every human institution, he stated, adding the police administration does have its fair share of bad nuts but was quick to add that on the whole the administration has a lot to boast of.

The administration over the past few weeks made the headlines for all the bad reasons when over 200 people simultaneously made their way to five regional police training centres with fraudulent police admission letters to begin a career in policing.

Things got worse when elements within the administration, including a high ranking Commissioner of Police Patrick Timbillah were deemed to have masterminded the fraudulent activities.

Timbillah has been interdicted whilst seven other suspects, two of whom are said to be police officials are in custody.

Mark Woyongo said the fraud came to his attention in December last year and made attempts to avert it.

The Minister applauded the commitment of the IGP Mohammed Alhassan to clean the service and remove all the bad nuts within the system.

On issues to do with recruitment, the minister said gone were the days when anybody at all could be enlisted into the service with or without sound educational background.

Now though, he said there is a process to ensure that those who wish to enter into the service at the officers level  do so with degrees while all other ranks enter with SHS certificates.

In order to fight indiscipline in the service, Mr Woyongo said the police is strenuously working towards the establishment of an independent police commission.

The commission would be made up of experts from different fields who would adjudicate on issues relating to conduct of police administration.
