The 2020 flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) Dr. Henry Lartey is urging former President John Dramani Mahama to rescind the decision by his party to challenge the 2020 election results in court.
His appeal follows weeks of protest by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to the declaration of the NPP's flagbearer, President Akufo-Addo as president-elect.
Amidst the demonstrations, party executives have hinted at seeking legal redress on the matter.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile, a member of the party’s legal team, Rockson Nelson Defeamekpor told host Samson Lardy Anyenini that the party will be challenging both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
But the GCPP flagbearer describes this as unnecessary.
According to him, it will also be in the best interest of Mr. John Dramani Mahama to concede defeat just like the other presidential candidates.
"He has lost the election, he shouldn’t go to court; it’s a waste of money. The presidential candidates, those of us who conceded have come together to maintain peace, we are trying to engage the former president but we were not able to see him. This is not the Mahama I know, he is a very open person but what is happening is not good for his reputation," he said.
Mr. Lartey who also doubles as the Secretary-General for the West African Association of Political Parties said he is convinced the former President and the flagbearer of the NDC is being coerced, hence his refusal to meet the other candidates.
“Mahama is been pushed to do what he is doing. I have no idea who is behind this, but he wouldn’t want to do this at all. I may be wrong but I have a feeling that there is a caucus that is pushing him.
"We were a team of six including myself, Dr Hassan Ayarigah of APC, Ivor Greenstreet of the CPP, David Apasera of PNC, JOY 2012/16, and Kofi Akpaloo of IPG, we tried to meet him…. If the NDC wants peace this is not how to deal with it,” he concluded.
