The Minister for Lands and Natural resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has indicated that government has an aggressive agenda to plant trees to ensure a green environment.
According to him, human life is hinged on the survival of trees, therefore, there is the need to protect the existing trees and plant new ones.
This was contained in a speech delivered by the Deputy Minister Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, George Meriku Duker, when he paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon Ya Na Abukari II to seek his support on the green Ghana agenda initiative.

Abu Jinapor, said that the agenda five million trees cannot be achieved without the blessings and support of the Overlord of Dagbon.
He stated that even though there has been a lot of effort in the past to plant trees, little has been achieved.

He revealed that the new approach, therefore, is to decentralise the tree planting exercise in all districts across the country to ensure its sustainability.
The Overlord of Dagbon Ya- a Abukari II lauded the agenda slated to start on June 11, 2021. He said that the trees in the area are constantly taken down leaving the area with bare lands.

The Ya-Na said this was affecting the environment and waterbodies in the area, citing the current water crises in Yendi as an example.
"Over here in Dagbon, there are no trees, this has affected the environment and the health of the people," he said.
According to the Ya-Na, the environment in the south is green because there are many trees which makes the environment more conducive.

He assured that he will lead the effort to plant trees on the 11th of June to indicate to the people of Dagbon that everybody must join the exercise.
The Norther Region, in recent times, has experienced violent wind storms which the National Disaster Management Organization has attributed to the absence of trees.

An example is the Chamba township wind storm disaster that ravaged public and private properties disrupting water and electricity supply.
