Deputy Employment and Social Welfare Minister, Antwi Bosiako Sekyere says government cannot be pressured into implementing the National Youth Policy.According to him, the policy needs to be reviewed to incorporate the vision of the government. His comments come in the wake of petitions and criticisms by pressure groups and opposition members accusing government of unnecessary delays in the implementation of the policy. The policy was drafted late last year and needs Executive and Parliamentary approval. On Wednesday, ex Minister for Youth and Employment Nana Akomea in an interview with Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, said any further delay in the implementation of the policy will lead to an explosion in the country’s unemployment rate.According to him, the country, despite its 52 years of existence, until recently had no clearly defined employment and youth policy on the ; a situation he said was hampering development in the country. He argued the current policy was drafted after thorough consultation with all stakeholders, saying, it is in the best interest of the country for the government to start implementing the policy.“Finally, even though it is taken so much time, finally we have it. It is gone through all the stakeholders you can think about. A bit of money has been spent in making sure this document has been done and they are contemporary,” he said. But the Deputy Employment Minister said the NDC then in opposition was not consulted prior to the drafting of the policy and could not implement it without making an input.“You just can’t say implement. I don’t think that is the right thing to do.“It will not be easy just to implement a policy you have come to meet in the ministry,” he said.He reckoned the policy will be implemented after government has completed its review.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
