Government will in the next few days undertake a major shakeup within the Customs and Excise and Preventive Service, and review the leadership of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Government says the inefficiency of some people within these agencies is making the state lose huge sums of money.
In his Daily media briefing at the Flagstaff House Tuesday morning, Information Minister Mahama Ayariga said the Chief of Staff has also set up a high-powered security task force to go round the country especially where revenue comes from and monitor activities there and apprehend persons who are robbing the state.
“Essentially they will be mounting surveillance intercepting, arresting, and checking at the various ports smuggling activities, importation of goods without paying the appropriate levies, VAT and apprehending people involved in those activities.”
The Information Minister explains further why government is about to make major changes at CEPS and review the leadership of GRA to “deal with the issue of revenue leakage”.
Mr Ayariga reiterated that government is aware that some businesses are not paying vat and other taxes they are supposed to pay.
“And we have reason to believe that there is a failure in terms of the leadership of these agencies stepping up their duties to hold these institutions and agencies accountable in terms of the payment of VAT and other Taxes.”
In an unrelated development, Mahama Ayariga has also shed light on Joy News’ exposé on the 13 year-old girl who has been forced to marry a 25-year-old man.
He surmised DOVVSU has been appraised, adding that the officer whose jurisdiction the incident happened would be held responsible if he fails to take appropriate action on the matter.
