The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a major infrastructure upgrade at its Afienya Substation, a project set to significantly improve power supply reliability for residents and businesses in Afienya and surrounding communities in the Greater Accra Region.
In a press release issued today, GRIDCo stated that the upgrade work will commence on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and is scheduled for completion in approximately five weeks.
The core of the project involves the replacement of an existing 50/66 MVA power transformer with a new, state-of-the-art unit with a substantially higher capacity of 120/145 MVA.

This upgrade represents a critical investment in the region's electrical backbone. The new transformer’s enhanced capacity will allow the Afienya Substation to serve more customers efficiently and provide a more stable and reliable power supply, supporting both current demand and future growth in the area.
Importantly, GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have assured the public that comprehensive measures are in place to ensure the work is carried out without causing any disruption to power supply for consumers. Engineers from both entities have collaborated closely to plan and execute the upgrade seamlessly.
"GRIDCo and ECG wish to thank all consumers for their cooperation as these works continue," the release stated, acknowledging the public's patience during essential national infrastructure projects.
