Workers of Ghana Telecom broke into spontaneous jubilation when the Speaker of Parliament ruled that the deal between GT and Vodafone had been approved.
The approval of the deal clears the way for the government to sell 70% per cent of its shares in GT to Vodafone at $900 million.
The workers who had been protesting in support of the deal heaved a sigh of relief when by a Majority decision the deal was passed.
“Yes, yes, it is done, it is done,” one ecstatic worker told Joy News’s Sammy Darko.
One of them said “we are going big, we are now going to launch Vodafone internally”.
He said he was not afraid of retrenchment because he competent and capable of meeting whatever targets given him.
The workers said they expected great thing following the takeover of GT by Vodafone UK.
They said the work culture which was not the best will now and “we must all gird out loins to work.”
In the Upper West Region GT workers said they were excited about the development.
According to them, they would have gone on a sit down strike if Parliament failed to approve the deal.
The assured Ghanaians of better quality service from Vodafone.
The Volta Regional workers of GT described the approval as a blessing.
One of them said a heavy load had been lifted off his head adding that “it is unfortunate that I don’t drink else I would have drunk my head off.”
Meanwhile Vodafone has hailed the approval of the deal.
The Press Officer of the company, Simon Gordon told Joy News that “we are mindful of differences in opinions” and would like to talk to all parties.
He said the workers of the company would be talked to by officials of Vodafone as a step in taking over GT.
