Soldiers and police officials at Ashaiman are said to be delivering several warning shots as some armed residents have besieged a hotel into which a ballot box was allegedly smuggled.
The mob, wielding clubs, stones and machetes believed the police had been conniving with a particular party to rig the election in the constituency, an eyewitness said.
Police officials who earlier entered the building in search of the ballot box said they found no electoral material.
A source told Accra-based Peace FM that the residents doubted the word of the police as some of them truly spotted a man enter the hotel building with the box.
Although security officials at the scene are on a sporadic warning shootout reporters say the situation could escalate as more people trooped to the scene of the incident.
The residents have threatened burning vehicles.
A military official who was injured when he was hit by a stray bullet from one of his colleagues is being conveyed to hospital.
Joy FM's Alex Kwabena Mensah reports there are thousands of people throwing stones.
He spoke to the Ashaiman District Police Commander, DCOP James Kudalor who said the people were just raising false alarm.
DCOP Kudalor said the hotel was searched but they found nothing.
After subsequent confirmation with the presiding officer, Alex Kwabena Mensah says no ballot box has been stolen.
Meanwhile, some supporters of the NDC are alleged to have vandalised billboards belonging to Nana Akufo-Addo, NPP presidential candidate and have set them ablaze.
They are reported also to have blocked the Ashaiman-Tema road.
Police reports say are firing warning shots to de-escalate the chaos and to ensure peace.
Voting however continues unabated.
