Street hawkers have returned to the pavements at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra after the city authorities made it clear that there are no immediate plans to use force to drive them away. They left the pavements earlier this week at the expiration of a 15th June deadline for them to voluntarily pack off. But they made a return today, claiming that they have nowhere else to go. As at the time of filing this report hawkers were doing brisk business in front of the Vodafone headquarters building in Accra. “We have no place to go,” one trader told Joy News as she yelled the praises of her wares. The situation was not different at the area in front of the Pedestrian Shopping Mall. Although hawkers there concede it is not advisable to sell on the streets, they claim they are unable to raise money to buy space at the mall. Some pedestrians who spoke to Joy News expressed their annoyance with the return of the hawkers to the pavements. It is unclear how the AMA intends to deal with hawking on pavements in Accra but governance experts say the issue is thorny. While the AMA boss Dr Alfred Vanderpuije had issued a 14-day ultimatum to hawkers to vacate the streets, Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashittey said no specific plan of action had been agreed on undertake the project. Streets in the capital have for years been swarmed by traders and attempts by previous authorities to check the situation have been fruitless.
