Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu has welcomed Parliament's decision to set up a committee to probe the government contracts for the purchase of Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccines from Russia.
The probe was approved after the majority side threw its weight behind a motion by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.
Mr Iddrisu had demanded that a committee investigates contracts the government signed with Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and one other supplier for Covid-19 vaccines procurement.
Haruna Iddrisu says the planned purchase of vaccines for $19 and more instead of the proposed $10.5 is not in the interest of the country and must be probed.
Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak says Mr Agyemang Manu was untruthful to parliament on the cost of vaccines and must be probed.
"When the MInister was telling the committee of this House that we should not approve the allocation for vaccines because no vaccine will be procured for more than 10 Dollars. This was on the 22nd of March."
According to him, "the Minister knew very well that on the 9th of March, he had signed a contract for $19 yet he had the courage to come to the committee of Parliament on 22nd to virtually lie to the committee that this vaccine will not be procured for more than $10."
But the Health Minister is fighting off these claims vehemently.
"I cannot fathom having signed an agreement and coming here to tell the house that we are not going to buy vaccine for more than $10 when I had done that for $19," he said.
Speaking on the floor, Mr Agyemang Manu called the Minority's bluff adding that he is ready to dispel the accusations at the committee which is being set up.
