A non-governmental organisation, Health Support Foundation, has donated items worth ¢10,000 to the children’s ward of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The items which were donated on Wednesday, September 21 include adult diapers, liquid soaps, toilet rolls, boxes of soaps, cleaning detergents, bags of rice, washing powders, toothbrushes, toothpaste, among others.

The donation follows the Foundation's enquiry weeks ago from the Psychiatric Hospital about some items needed to care for the patients.

Presenting the items to the Hospital, the Executive Director and Founder of the Foundation, James Mawuli Gawu, said the Foundation is pleased to support young adults and children battling mental health.

He expressed confidence in the nurses and physicians at the Hospital and encouraged them to use the items for their right purposes.

"It [the donation] is something that we are doing as a testament and our acknowledgement that these people are bonafide members of our society that we respect and care for very much and for whom we can support as much as we can for their well-being.

"We believe there are competent nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists who believe in our vision, believe that we are doing something right by supporting this unit and, therefore, we want to ask calmly and in the firm belief that these items will truly go the patients and people here for their well-being," he said.

In addition, a private donation of ¢2,000 was also presented to the Hospital by a member of the Foundation.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Hospital, the Nursing Officer, Nana Boakye Yiadom, expressed gratitude to the Foundation and assured that the items will indeed be used for their right purposes.

"We are so appreciative of this donation. It came with so many items which we are in desperate need of because the ward has been lacking a lot, especially in areas of sanitation.

“We are going to use them for their intended purposes; they are going to be used for the children and solely for children," she stressed.

She called on other NGOs to support the facility as it lacks many other items and funds to care for the patients.

Mr Gawu further applauded the nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for their sacrifices and contributions toward the well-being of the numerous patients at the hospital.
