Accra Hearts of Oak commenced the second half of the Glo Premier League on a high with a 1-0 win over inform Kumasi King Faisal at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The only goal of the game came after 71minutes courtesy an expertly converted penalty from Ivorian import Robin Gnagne after defender Ransford Kwakye handled a goal bound effort by Mahatma Otoo. Faisal would be very disappointed they didn’t go back to the garden City with at least a point to show for their effort after a decent performance against the homeside.
The Phobians went into the game on the back of just a single win in their last eight Premier League games and for a side with such history and pedigree, that was simply not good enough. Goal scoring had been a massive challenge for them and for the numerous Phobian faithful at the Accra Sports Stadium, nothing than a good start to the 2nd Round of the Premiership was going to be acceptable.
The side, knowing very well the task ahead of them, started the game on the high and could have gotten their noses in front under a minute. A brilliant cut back from the wing had James Bissue through on goal but with only Faisal goalkeeper Ibrahim Iddrissu to beat, the player conspired to spurn away that opportunity.
Faisal were clearly rattled by this early Phobian onslaught but quickly settled into the game and had their fair share of possession. The tide would turn though when the visitors were reduced to ten men by Referee Cecil Fletcher after Faisal center half Tetteh Nortey was sent off for obstructing Bissue from reaching a through ball.
The Phobians capitalized on this advantage but failed to convert the few chances that came their way ending the first half goalless.
The two coaches made a raft of substitutions a few minutes into the second half. Bissue and Owusu Bempah were taken off and replaced by Abanga nad Issaka Mohamed respectively and this only piled on the pressure on the Faisal defence With a player advantage, it was only a matter of time before the Phobian onslaught paid dividends.
In a lightening counter attack, an in swinger by returnee Emmanuel Osei was beautifully connected by skipper Mahatma Otoo only for hard pressed Ransford Kwakye to handle the ball in the box. Ref Cecil Fletcher pointed to the penalty spot with Ivorian import Robin Gnagne scoring the only goal of the game.
The visitors went out in search of the equalizer but the Phobians held firm for a dream start to the 2nd Round of the Glo Premier League.
