Ottmar Hitzfeld believes that a Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund player could win the Fifa Ballon d'Or this year following their good performances in the Champions League.
The award has been dominated by Lionel Messi in recent seasons, but the Switzerland coach feels players such as Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller could dethrone the Barcelona star this year.
"Bayern and Dortmund players have a chance in the Fifa Ballon d'Or election this year. The Champions League final will be an important moment," the former Bayern and Dortmund boss told Kicker.
"Thomas Muller in particular has impressed me this season. He has developed incredibly well. And obviously Robert Lewandowski.
"Gotze is already world class, too. His transfer will only motivate him. And his start in Munich would be even easier if he arrives as a Champions League winner."
Current Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer was the last Bundesliga player to win the Ballon d'Or in 1996 after shining for Dortmund and Germany.
