Parliament’s Appointment Committee has finished vetting three Appeals Court Justices who appeared before it to answer questions on a wide range of issues.Justices Benjamin Teiko Aryeetey, Suleiman Nasru Gbadegbe and Vida Akoto Bamfo all, were nominated for appointment to the Supreme Court. The three answered questions on capital punishment, the problem of remand prisoners, the law on causing financial loss and allegations of executive manipulation of the Judiciary.Justice Benjamin Teiko Aryeetey, with a legal career spanning over 38 years, was first to appear before the committee. He had a hard time explaining whether the political orientation of Supreme Court Justices should be made public. His session was followed immediately by Justice Suleiman Nasiru Gbadegbey, who chaired a commission which probed the transfer of football players in 1999.Majority Leader and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho said the backgrounds of all three persons had been duly investigated and expressed optimism they would “pass through”.“In my view I think that they are people who have carried out their judicial functions above board,” Mr Adjaho told Joy News after vetting on Monday. He said the justices are good picks by the Supreme Court, drawing on their several years experience “in their chosen career.” Play the attached audio for excerpts of the interview with Hon Doe Adjaho.
