Following the premiere of Netflix+Shondaland’s Queen Charlotte, the internet has been abuzz about the spectacular cast ensemble they had brought together to tell the story of Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power.
But the actor most Ghanaians might be more interested in is India Amarteifio, who plays the titular Queen Charlotte.
By origin of her surname, Amarteifio, it is quite clear she has some Ghanaian heritage.
“She looks like me, obviously,” the modern Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel says in an interview with Netflix.
She reveals that in order to pick an actress that could effortlessly transition the character from her older years to her younger self, she had to submit a picture of her younger self to the casting crew.
“I know I’d sent a picture of my younger self. I wanted it to be a surprise. I left it to the universe to bring us India Amartefio,” she said.
According to her, the wide acclaim the precision in casting has received from all those that have seen the show made her “ joyous at their reaction. We’d done our job.”
