The Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo/Pankrono Constituency in Kumasi says he has not reneged on his role as the people’s representative following accusations of neglect.

Dr Akoto Osei said he knows about the pains, anguish and fears of the constituents.

Speaking to the media at a press briefing Thursday, he said he has been at the forefront of advocating and conferring with national security and government throughout the impasse between the locals and the Muslim youth.

Old Tafo has for some time now become a hotbed of violence after clashes between Muslim youth and loyalists of the Old Tafo Council in February led to the death of one person and the destruction of properties

The alleged attack is linked to an incident in which the Moslem youth reportedly attacked with the Council over disagreements over a piece of land at the Tafo cemetery.

In April this year, the then Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu admitted to Joy News' Mohammed Nurudeen that the authorities might have flouted the law in imposing a curfew on Old Tafo.

The curfew became necessary after the clashes claimed one life and caused injury to many with several properties also destroyed.

There is rising tension in the area over the same matter with fears of reprisals.

In response to these developments, Mr Bonsu imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew, which was reviewed to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Addressing the issues, Dr Akoto admitted that he wasn’t part of the earlier government delegation to Tafo in the early stages of the incident led by the National Chief Imam.

However, he said he met the chiefs from both factions for a construction discussion.

According to him, the Tafo issue is very sensitive for an MP to meddle in that's why he took a cautious approach.

Dr Akoto adds that it bothers on chieftaincy and land ownership, which needs cautious steps to be taken.

He dismisses claims that, he wasn't doing well as expected as a representative of the people and that he has been working around the clock in parliament.

He appealed to the residents to let cool heads prevail and exercise restraint while an amicable settlement is sought to end the impasse.
